HBO-ICT Propedeuse GD Playbook

This project method focuses on students developing and applying professional skills for designing multiple games.

Description

The Game Development Propedeuse is part of HBO-ICT. The courses will give you the tools to develop games alone, in duos and as a team. You will learn how to program games, but you will also learn essential game design principles. You will have plenty of opportunities to use these strategies, because there is a lot of room for experiment.

You work and learn in projects. By carrying out projects you will gain insight into the professional practice of making games and will thus encounter theory, methods and techniques that will help you further.

We work agile, which means that you work on partial products in short periods. This means you receive regular feedback about your products and performance. This will give you insights on how to further improve yourself.

There is a lot of room for self-management through learning stories: self-defined learning goals in which you define what you need to learn in order to get the work done.

Other learning activities during the work sessions are: workshops, knowledge sharing sessions, coaching, presentations of your work, (guest) lectures and reflection moments.

The Propedeuse GD is divided into four projects.

Goal

During the first project, you’ll be recreating a classic video game by yourself. During development of the game, you will learn the basics of game programming, as well as how you can learn different methods and techniques to accomplish your goals.

Why

You are taking your first step into a larger world! Since you are probably new at developing video games, we need to start at the beginning. Classic video games are relatively easy to understand and recreate. The game design challenges have already been solved for you, since you don’t have to brainstorm about gameplay just yet. However, classic games are the perfect type of games to introduce you to the basics of programming video games.

What

During the project you will mainly focus on programming techniques such as variables, if-statements, for-loops, functions and other methods. If, however, you are starting to notice that you are getting pretty good at the programming part of the game and you are finished early, there are some game design methods & techniques for you to consider such as juicing and polishing the final version of the game.
